Barry Dangerfield began his mining career as a project engineer with CONSOL's Northern WV Region in 1972. In 1976, he became a longwall section foreman for Four States Mine in Mannington. In 1977-78, he served as Four States' longwall coordinator and later as its assistant superintendent, and quickly rose to the position of superintendent in 1979. Between 1984 and 1996, he was employed by CONSOL's Morgantown Operations as technical assistant to the vice president and then Vice President of the Morgantown Operations. Since 1996 he has been vice president of CONSOL Energy's Virginia, Kentucky and Southern West Virginia Operations.

Dangerfield is a member of the following professional organizations: the West Virginia Coal Mining Institute, SME, Eastern Coal Council, WVU Department of Mining Engineering Visiting Committee, University of Kentucky Visiting Committee, and the Sequoya Council Boy Scouts of America-Virginia/Tennessee.

Dangerfield is married and has three daughters. One daughter is a sophomore at WVU.
