Dahl, a retired coal mining executive, received his bachelors, masters and doctorate, all in mining engineering, from The Pennsylvania State University.
After graduation, Dahl became a research scientist with Conoco, then Consol Energy's parent company. He rose through the ranks and was named manager of the Mining Research Division in 1975.
Throughout his career, he held executive positions with several coal companies, including Consol, Drummond, Peabody and Brook Trout Coal Companies. He retired in 1998 as president and chief operating officer of Peabody Coal.
Dahl has received many awards and distinctions throughout his career including the Jackling and Rock Mechanics Award from The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) and the Distinguished Alumni Fellowship Award from Penn State.
He completed the senior executive program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. He has authored more than 30 published papers and has 11 patents.
