John Zachwieja is vice president of central Appalachia operations for Consolidation Coal Company overseeing mining operations in East Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and South West Virginia. Zachwieja began his service in the coal industry as an hourly employee at the age of 18. Zachwieja, who has served his entire coal industry career with Consol Energy, Inc., has held various increasing responsibilities at various mines. He served as technical assistant to the vice president at CONSOL's Blacksville, Morgantown, Virginia and Moundsville operations.

Zachwieja became superintendent of the Shoemaker mine in 1999 and in 2001 became responsible for the CONSOL-acquired underground mines of the American Electric Power Company. He then became general manager overseeing the operation of international properties in Canada and Australia as well as properties in Utah, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. Zachwieja first became vice president of the River Operations prior to his present assignment as vice president of central Appalachia operations. His expertise encompasses all facets of mining, continuous miner and longwall production, ventilation, degasification, mainline and section coal haulage and transportation, cost control and budgeting.

Zachwieja and his wife, Patty, have five children, three grandchildren and live in Bluefield.
