Walter J. Scheller, III, is Chief Executive Officer and Director of Warrior Met Coal, a pure-play metallurgical coal mining company headquartered in Brookwood, Alabama.
Mr. Scheller was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Warrior Met Coal in March 2016. He formerly served as Chief Executive Officer of Walter Energy, Inc. (“Walter Energy”), from September 2011 to March 2016, when certain mining assets of Walter Energy were acquired by Warrior Met Coal, LLC. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Walter Energy’s primary subsidiary, Jim Walter Resources, Inc., from June 2010 to September 2011. Mr. Scheller then served on the board of directors of Walter Energy from September 2011 to March 2016. With over 40 years of experience, Mr. Scheller held numerous roles including Senior Vice President – Strategic Operations of Peabody Energy Corporation (“Peabody”) from June 2006 to June 2010. Prior to his career at Peabody, Mr. Scheller worked for CNX Gas Corporation as Vice President and, CONSOL Energy Inc. where he held numerous executive and operational roles.
Mr. Scheller is an accomplished leader in mining where he is active on several boards in the industry. He currently serves on the Board of the Alabama Mining Association (Chairman 2014-2016), as well as the National Mining Association (Chairman, Audit and Finance Committee 2021 – present). He was recently inducted into the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame in March 2024.
Mr. Scheller graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering and received his Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University and his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh – Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business.
